The notion of ‘bare skin’ or ‘nude’ is being redefined through engineered visibility, where complexion, material, and transparency are calibrated with increasing precision.
This evolution reflects a broader cultural movement where intimacy, vulnerability, and sensuality are filtered, adjusted, and made intentional. Within this context, transparency becomes a constructed effect. The skin is no longer treated as a surface to expose, but as a medium to orchestrate, one where what is visible is deliberate, and what is diffused remains part of the narrative.
This shift is strongly echoed in consumer behavior. According to our partner Spate’s research tool, in the U.S., conversations around “natural finish” have significantly intensified, with Instagram posts increasing by +227% YoY (Spate - Instagram U.S. posts - from Apr 13, 2025 to Apr 12, 2026 vs. Apr 14, 2024 to Apr 13, 2025). At the same time, the language of complexion is evolving toward notions of “second skin” and “skin-like makeup,” reflecting a growing desire for finishes that preserve the identity of the skin while refining its appearance. On TikTok, “second skin” alone has surged by +401% YoY (Spate - TikTok U.S. views - from Apr 13, 2025 to Apr 12, 2026 vs. Apr 14, 2024 to Apr 13, 2025), highlighting the cultural traction of this aesthetic.
What emerges is a new balance between authenticity and control. Skin remains real, yet optimized, never fully exposed, never fully hidden.
The Aesthetics of the Veil
Selective Sheer finds one of its strongest expressions at the intersection of beauty and fashion. The exploration of sheer materials, second-skin silhouettes, and layered transparency has redefined how the body is revealed, through gradation rather than immediacy.
Designers are increasingly working with garments that merge with the skin, creating a tension between exposure and construction. At New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2026, TTSWTRS’ “Skin Couture” embodies this approach, where clothing becomes an extension of the body, playing with illusion, layering, and controlled revelation. Similarly, Calvin Klein’s runway emphasizes intimate layering, reinforcing the idea of progressive unveiling rather than total visibility.
This aesthetic logic is echoed on the red carpet. At the Met Gala 2026, Kendall Jenner’s dress exemplifies this calibrated transparency through its second-skin effect and sculpted construction. The garment appears to merge with the body, emphasizing contours while maintaining a sense of fluidity and softness. Its sheer, body-mapped design creates a controlled interplay between exposure and concealment, where the silhouette is revealed through tension, structure, and material rather than overt display. This approach aligns with the broader movement toward selective visibility. The body is not simply shown, it is framed, filtered, and staged.
Sensuality emerges through suggestion, through surfaces that invite perception without fully disclosing.
New Generations of Serum Tints
Beauty follows this same logic. Makeup textures behave like veils: filtering, diffusing, and reshaping perception. The face becomes a composition of zones, where opacity and translucency coexist in a controlled balance, with a new generation of textures designed to fuse seamlessly with the skin. Serum and gel-based systems are transforming complexion products into imperceptible layers that mimic the movement and appearance of bare skin. These formulations no longer function as traditional coverage products, but as adaptive complexion technologies engineered to modulate light, texture, and visibility in real time.
Recent product launches illustrate this direction. m.ph’s Le Skin Weightless Foundation introduces a serum-like texture that glides onto the skin, delivering a fresh, second-skin finish with buildable coverage. Refy’s Skin Base Skin Tint advances this approach through a gel-based formula powered by a “second-skin pigment system,” where pigments are suspended within a flexible film that adapts to movement and maintains hydration over time.
This increasing level of formulation sophistication reflects a broader transformation. As textures become more complex and adaptive, makeup evolves into a responsive layer, capable of adjusting to the skin while maintaining a consistent aesthetic, redefining the concept of “nude” skin.
WHAT’S NEXT
For brands, transparency becomes a formulation strategy. Engineered as calibrated layers, sheer evolves into a system of adjustable visibility. Adaptive textures, second-skin pigment networks, and responsive finishes enable continuous modulation, allowing the skin to be fine-tuned rather than simply enhanced.
At the same time, the rise of sheer dressing, body-mapped silhouettes, and second-skin textiles continues to reshape beauty aesthetics. As fashion redefines the nude through layering, diffusion, and controlled exposure, makeup follows with complexion products designed to blur the boundary between skin and material. Nude no longer refers to invisibility or neutrality, but to a curated interaction between body, texture, and perception.
This evolution reflects a broader shift explored in our latest What’s Up report, where visibility becomes increasingly orchestrated across categories. Through breathable veils, selective blur, and adaptive finishes, makeup evolves into a precision-driven complexion system shaped by transparency, adaptability, and engineered perception.
